Abstract
This article present results of hydrochemical assessmcnt of 43 trace element content of a
costal plain sand aquifer. The aim was mainly to determine the natural background evel of trace
elements due to anticipated urban and industrial development as a result of the establishment of an
export free zone in the area. Results show that all the elements considered are below common averages. Statistical factor
analysis indicate two geochemical groups of elements. The first is related to natural geochemical process and the second to
tidal flushing of the Calabar River estuary. This indicate that the sources of the elements are natural. This data which is
the first of its kind in the area will form a baseline data set for future pollution monitoring and vulnerability assessment
of the aquifer.
