Abstract
A knowledge of the system Bi-Fe-Hg-O-Pb is necessary to understand possible
degradation mechanisms in the MEGAPIE spallation target window. The present work aimed at
investigating a few subsystems: the ternary Bi-Hg-Pb and several oxides in order to determine the
most efficient directions for studying the quinary system. Differential scanning calorimetry was
used to complement literature data before computing the ternary Bi-Hg-Pb with the Thermocalc
software. Oxide layers growing on T91 steel immersed in liquid Pb or Bi-Pb eutectic, in working
conditions close to that of the MEGAPIE target, were identified.
