Abstract
We experimentally investigate the interaction of a high intensity 2-ps Nd : Glass laser pulse with preformed plasma, relevant to longitudinally-pumped transient-collisional-excitation x-ray lasers. The transverse intensity profile of the longitudinal beam after propagation through molybdenum preplasma is experimentally observed. The experimental results are found to be well reproduced by simple hydrodynarnic and ray-tracing calculations, if the nonuniform intensity distribution along the line-focus is taken into account.
