Abstract
We study sliding friction based on the extended Frenkel-Kontorova model in 1 and 2 dimensions. Aubry
transition, that is, the transition between commensurate and discommensurate structures, is discussed. It turns out that the
phonon gap and the maximum static frictional force varies in a fractal way as a function of the elastic constants of the system
due to the complicated change of discommensurate structures. Transverse pinning in the case of 2 dimension is also studied.
