The martensitic transformation under non-proportional thermo-mechanical loading is investigated by means of experiments and micromechanical modeling. The eigenstrain associated with the phase transformation is of high technological relevance. Our model questions the common assumption made in modeling this TRIP-strain namely the co-linearity between the TRIP-strain and the deviatoric part of the applied stress state. Studying the influence of a back stress introduced by cyclic loading before the martensitic transformation experimentally and by means of our micromechanical model, a significant effect of a back stress on the final transformation strain cannot be found.
