Abstract
A large volume fraction of atoms in nanocrystalline materials is located in surfaces and interfaces. Atoms facing the particle boundaries have a different local structure than atoms inside the particle. This heterogeneous disorder is investigated for nanocrystalline yttria powder by EXAFS spectroscopy.
