Abstract
Near edge X-MCD and spin polarised EXAFS spectra have been recorded at the L2,3-edges of Eu in EuS. Only the intensity but not the shape of the X-MCD spectrum is altered when EuS evolves from the ferromagnetic to the paramagnetic phase, i.e. above 20 K. Spin polarised EXAFS spectra confirm that the sulfur 3p valence band electrons are the mediators of the antiferromagnetic coupling between next-nearest Eu neighbours.
