Abstract
In this paper we have shown the importance of taking into account some parameters like the incident angle, the beam polarization and the refractive index of the materials when we deal with absorption problems of the infrared radiation in laser surface heat treatments of materials. We have carried out some experiments with spheroidal graphite cast iron samples, directly from polishing, superfïcially oxidized or spray coated with a graphite powder. The obtained results were explained applying the Fresnel equations for reflection and transmission coefficients generalized to absorbing media [1].
