Historically shape-memory phenomena have been thought to exist only in ordered alloy systems which exhibit thermoelastic transformation to twinned martensitic products. However, it is now known that this is not always the case, and that there are a number of different ways in which a material can fulfil the more general requirements for shape-memory. This paper reviews these requirements and illustrates how a range of transformation types can fulfil these criteria and therefore exhibit shape-memory behaviour.
