Abstract
Al-2.4 wt% Mg–5.5 wt% Zn alloy specimens were subjected to loading by spherical converging shock waves. The microstructure of different layers of the recovered specimens was studied by optical and transmission electron microscopy and microhardness measurements along radius. It was established that the alloy exhibits high dislocation density, localization of deformation and formation of complicated deformation defects. The high dislocation density does not lead to the formation of a cell-like structure in this alloy. Cross-slip of dislocations was found to be suppressed by increasing the shock wave pressure.
