Ballistic penetration response of high strength bainitic steel

Abstract
An experimental program has been undertaken to study the phenomen of both normal impact of 7.62 mm AP bullets against tested plates, and of ballistic penetration response of high strength bainitic steel. A large amount of general plastic flow changes the texture of plate material in the traveling direction of the projectile. Number cracks are connected to the white-etched shear bands, in the vicinity of the perforated region. The hardening of ultra fine grained microstructure within the adiabatic shear bands greatly overrides the prior quenching effect. At the boundary, elongated grain structure is extended in a direction of shear bands. Microhardness measurements of pressure weld of projectile and crater bottom material revealed of thermal softening and strain hardening effects respectively.
