Abstract
The mechanical behavior of the nitrogen steels P900, P2000, PANACEA and a gradient material has been investigated by means of various tests methods spanning the strain rate regime from quasi-static to high dynamic loading. The dynamic tests include Split-Hopkinson-Bar-Tests and Planar-Plate-Impact Tests in combination with a VISAR. Many steel types show a phase transition when loaded to pressure stresses exceeding 13 GPa Contrary to the behavior of these steels this phase-transition is suppressed in nitrogen alloyed austenitic steels due to the presence of nitrogen. In addition to the determination of the quasi-static, dynamic and shock properties of the P900, P2000 and PANACEA the results of SEM examination of softly recovered shock loaded samples will be presented, yielding insight in the failure mechanisms at high rates of strain.
