Abstract
The essential results of experimental studies on shear strain development and localization in a high-strength steel, a titanium alloy, and a mild sheet steel under impact loading are presented. The prevailing effect of heating at intense plastic flow on the development of plastic shear and the formation of adiabatic shear bands in metals at high strain rates is confirmed by the analysis of experimental data, the changes in the microstructure, and the results of numerical simulations. The distribution of temperature, raised as the result of localized plastic flow, determines the scale and nature of microstructure changes and phase transformations in metals.
