Direct solar steam generation in parabolic troughs (DISS). Update on project status and future planning

Abstract
Solar thermal power plants based on parabolic trough collectors are the most successful solar technology for electricity generation, as demonstrated by the SEGS plants in California. Direct steam generation in the absorber tubes is seen as a promising option to further the competitiveness of this technology. After comprehensive theoretical studies and lab-scale experiments, a full scale solar steam generator is required for system tests and demonstration. In the project DISS, with financial support from the European JOULE Programme, research institutions, industries and utilities from Spain and Germany co-operate to build and operate such a facility at the Plataforma Solar de Almería (PSA). During the first phase of the project, the detailed design of the solar steam generator and the associated Balance of Plant (BOP) was developed, and the first stage of the system is nearing completion on the PSA. After an explanation of project goals and structure, the present status of work will be reported, and some lessons learned from the design, procurement and implementation of the test-loop will be presented. Finally, an outlook on the planning for the next phase will be given.
