Abstract
The beam deflection method has been used for the detection of ultrasound absorption in a plane sample of silicon rubber which in a water bath is exposed to a beam of ultrasound. Parallel scanning of the laser beam across the pump beam cross section yields the acoustic power transmitted to the absorber. Measurements in dependence on ultrasound frequency show the mirage signal to correlate well with the absorption coefficient of the material.
