Abstract
After a reminder of the principal sources contributing to community noise and the progress made during the last twenty years to control them, a report is made on the state of the art in the field of noise control, and on the prospects of improvement. The main local, national and international regulations with which aircraft must comply are presented, and the technical and financial impact of more stringent certification regulations is discussed. A projection of this community noise is made using the best technology actually available to control the noise and on the basis of the evolution in the composition of the world fleet. Finally, the new projects being designed by the constructors and the courses of research in which it is necessary to invest in order to improve the situation are presented.
