Abstract
The dynamic behaviour of two commercial metal matrix composites with discontinuous reinforcement (A12618, 20%Al2O3 and A359, 20%CSi) was tested using a Split Hopkinson pressure bar with a furnace coupled to the bars for dynamic compression tests at high temperature. The influence on the dynamic properties of strain rate, temperature (23-400C) and heating time before the test was analysed. The materials were tested in free temper state and after heat treatment, and presented very different behaviour. A decrease in the elastic limit was observed as temperature increased. The elastic limit increased slightly as the strain rate increased.
