Abstract
The presentation deals with results of a computational and experimental investigation on the performance of EFPs against armor steel targets. For our purpose, calculations were carried out using the Eulerian capability of the second-order multi-material hydrocode OTI*HULL. The failure behaviour of the target was treated using the "P/Y failure curve" capability of the code. Examples are presented of successful application with such simulations featuring iron and tantalum EFPs between 1800 m/s and 2100 m/s. A number of the simulations undertaken were experimented to verify the predictive ability of the numerical tool. Flash X-radiographs were taken prior to impact to determine the inclination of the projectiles, and during the penetration process to obtain terminal diagnostics.
