Abstract
We give an overview of methods used in the study of electronic structure and statistical mechanics of ionic configurations in hot plasmas. Various methods that can be applied to the statistics of the configurations, starting from the electronic structure given by the Average Atom Model (AAM) of the plasma, are first recalled. Then the Superconfiguration Method (SCM), recently proposed for the calculation of radiative properties, is briefly described. Numerical results for the electron populations and radiation absorption are presented for Nickel plasmas, comparing the AAM and SCM methods.
