Abstract
In the presented paper the DNA is treated as a crystal with corresponding symmetry and with surface charge density on a double helix immersed in a weak electrolyte. The surrounding solvent is treated via the non-linear Poisson - Boltzmann equation and the boundary conditions of the electrostatics are fulfilled on the DNA-solvent interface. Analytical expressions for the electric potentials inside and outside DNA are obtained. The obtained results give the possibility for a map of the surface potential of DNA to be created. They also show that electric potentials and field inside DNA and outside it, as well as the structure of the macromolecule, can be influenced from the parameters of the solvent. Numerical calculations in the case of B-DNA are performed and graphically presented.
