Application of computational fluid dynamics to solar thermal receiver/reactor modellingH. Schmidt-Traub and T. Hahm

Modern Computational Fluid Dynamics Software (CFDS) is capable of integrating conductive, convective and radiative heat transfer into one single model. The CFD-Software CFX was successfully applied to model a receiver/reactor for high-temperature liquid-phase processes. The special characteristics of the concentrated solar flux as well as spectral dependent material properties have been implemented into the simulation. Experimental and modelling work should be regarded as complementary. Experiments are needed for validation and the simulations help to interpret the test results and extrapolate to different scales, geometries and material properties.
