Ohba, Otsuka and Sasaki have established that the rubber-like behavior in the martensitic phase of Au-47.5at%Cd alloys cannot be caused by the change in the long-range order during the room temperature annealing. The rubber-like behavior should be understood in terms of the mechanical relaxation associated with the change in the orientation of the local short range order. It is proposed that, while the short-range order plays a prominent role in the rubber-like behavior in the martensite, it should play a comparablly important role also in the austenite.
