Abstract
In this paper we review the main significant results obtained up to now by X-ray diffuse scattering analysis applied to crystallized proteins. The results are classified in two groups : those assuming intermolecular correlations and those assuming short and long-range intramolecular correlations. We try to perform a synthesis of these results and we specially discuss the diffuse scattering in terms of the low frequency normal modes or the "liquid-like motion". In addition, we also consider the effect of uncoupled rigid body translations of the molecule, sometimes found to be in good agreement with the experimental patterns.
