Zinc oxide single crystals: Temperature and radiation effect on firmness and plasticity

Abstract
Mechanical properties of bulk ZnO single crystals are studied depending on crystallographic orientation, temperature and radiation. The shapes of the indenter prints and dislocation rosettes were analyzed for the faces of monohedron (0001), hexagonal prisms {10 $\overline,

 WIDTH=0 $\overline plane, the 
fracture toughness coefficient K<IMG
 WIDTH= was found to be K $_{1\rm C}{\sim}$0.09 MPa m1/2, Young modulus E = 47.7 GPa, microhardness H = 1.7 GPa, coefficient of surface energy of destruction $\gamma $ = 0.085 J/m2. For (0001) face H = 4.2 GPa.
